Open communication before conceiving of you planning a pregnancy can go a long way. It will help you plan at the right and safe moment. It is important to discuss your rheumatologist as well as your obstetrician. Together, they can tailor a management plan that addresses both your RA and the specific considerations of pregnancy.

2. Plan for Medication Adjustments

Discussing your medications with your rheumatologist is crucial. Some RA medications, like methotrexate, leflunomide will need to be stopped at least 3 months or even more before you consider conceiving a baby. Other medications, such as TNF -alpha inhibitors are considered relatively safe to continue until your third trimester. If you are taking hydroxychloroquine or azathioprine, these are considered safe during pregnancy time. However, a discussion with the rheumatologist is always required before changing the medication. I strongly recommend you not do adjustments on your own.

Your healthcare team will closely monitor both your RA and the well-being of the baby. Make sure to attend all scheduled appointments and communicate any changes or concerns promptly.
