Understanding the Link Between Cherries and Gout

Initially based on anecdotal evidence from the 1950s, contemporary research has offered a scientific basis for the theory that cherries – in fresh, extract, or juice form – can help reduce uric acid levels in the bloodstream. Although the study did not manipulate or control participants’ behaviors, the significant decrease in gout attacks in those who consumed cherries or cherry extract cannot be ignored. In 2023, another study was published and it showed the beneficial effect of tart cherries in decreasing the frequency of gout attacks and decreased the level of inflammation. 

The Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Cherries

The benefits of cherries extend beyond uric acid management. These fruits are packed with natural substances that combat inflammation, a painful bodily response triggered by high uric acid levels. The cherries’ anti-inflammatory properties could potentially alleviate gout symptoms, such as pain and swelling.

In fact, several studies have found that the regular consumption of cherries can lower the levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation in the body. These benefits were observed not only in healthy individuals but also in those suffering from arthritis.

Divergent Views and Precautions Regarding Cherry Consumption

Despite the endorsement of cherry consumption by reputable health organizations like the British Society for Rheumatology and the European League Against Rheumatism, some entities, including the Food and Drug Administration, advise caution. They warn against the claims made by some companies that cherry juice can cure diseases like gout.

Yet, for individuals without diabetes, daily consumption of 10-12 cherries during the cherry season could potentially reduce the risk of gout attacks.

While current research shows promising results regarding cherries’ effects on gout, it is important to understand that they should not be viewed as a sole solution.

They should be a part of a comprehensive dietary approach to manage gout effectively.
