His Story
An engineer's precision. A physician's heart.
Before medicine, Dr. Devalla was an engineer — earning dual degrees in Electrical & Electronics and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Engineering taught him how to take apart complex systems, find the failing component, and fix it. Autoimmune disease, he discovered, is the human version of that puzzle: many signals, tangled causes, and answers that only reveal themselves when someone is patient enough to look at all the data.
His path to caring for people wasn’t theoretical. He organized medical mission trips to Haiti, helped establish a nonprofit free clinic in Kampala, Uganda, and volunteered in internal medicine clinics in Madagascar — learning early that the best medicine begins with listening to people whom systems have overlooked.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine with honors from Trinity School of Medicine, completed internal medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, and then his rheumatology fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center — Ivy League training that included clinical trial interpretation, translational research, and biomarker integration. Before joining Rheumatologist OnCall, he practiced as a rheumatologist at Essentia Health, leading cross-functional case reviews with pharmacy, radiology, and pathology teams, and driving quality initiatives in steroid stewardship — protecting patients from the long-term harms of overused corticosteroids.
At ROC, Dr. Devalla treats the full spectrum of complex autoimmune and inflammatory disease — rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, and gout — with a special interest in the gut–immune connection. As a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD), he is also the team’s bone-health expert, bringing precision osteoporosis diagnosis and fracture prevention to patients — especially those on long-term steroids.
